Where Missouri goes in August
The Missouri State Fair

by Bob McEowen

Each August in Missouri all the best-dressed horses, cattle and swine head to the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia to vie for the attention of fairgoers and judges alike. For handlers and show animals — like the two contestants in the draft horse hitch competition shown on our cover — the annual livestock and agricultural exposition is the culmination of a year’s worth of preparation.

The state fair, held this year Aug. 12-22, offers much more than just agricultural contests, though. There are carnival rides, tractor pulls, auto racing, animal acts like Bengal tigers and racing pigs, commercial exhibitors and all manner of tasty treats. From corndogs to the rib-eye steak served at the beef producers building there are offerings for every taste bud.

With your belly full you can get an earful from the fair’s grandstand entertainment. This year’s line-up includes Charlie Daniels, ZZ Top, Montgomery Gentry, Toby Keith, Nickelback and Brooks & Dunn.

While you’re at the fair be sure to stop by the Missouri’s Electric Cooperatives Building for interesting displays, a chance to win valuable prizes and a visit with Buddy Bear, our loveable Just4Kids mascot.

Admission to the fair is $7 and parking is free. A number of special promotions offer reduced entry and ride prices throughout the fair. Check the Missouri State Fair Web site,, or call 1-800-422-3247 for more information.
