Missourians plan annual ag showcase

Missouri’s agriculture showcase is almost here. From deep-fried bites to rides in the midway to showing that perfect pig, the state fair has something for everyone. The fair runs from Aug. 11-21 with entertainment available across the fairgrounds. The grandstand has a full lineup highlighted by Sam Hunt on Aug. 13 and ZZ Top on Aug. 17.

Be sure your visit includes a stop at the Missouri’s Electric Cooperatives Building, located across from the grandstand. The building is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and showcases the work Missouri’s electric cooperatives do to make rural Missouri a great place to live and play. Ground-source heat pumps offer a reprieve from the late-summer heat. Co-op personnel are on hand to answer questions, and there are displays on energy efficiency, safety and cooperative youth programs.

In the Rural Missouri area there are displays of our favorite stories, our popular “People From Our Pages” demonstrators and you can have your photo taken in front of a mural depicting Rural Missouri mascot Buddy Bear. Or you can meet him in person if you visit the building at 10 a.m., noon or 2 p.m. daily from Aug. 12-20.

Attending college or trade school this fall? Missouri’s electric cooperatives are offering four $500 scholarships. The MEC Building is the only place the applications can be picked up or turned in. Winners will be chosen by a blind drawing, must have a permanent Missouri address and be a member in good standing of an electric cooperative. Applicants must visit the MEC Building during the fair, legibly complete the application and be accepted as a student at a college, university and/or a vocational, technical school program for the upcoming semester.

Friday, Aug. 19 is Missouri Electric Cooperatives Day. The first 1,500 visitors to the MEC Building will receive a free LED lightbulb. Clip the coupon on this page, and on that day you can ride in the midway until your heart’s content with $5 off an unlimited ride wristband.

There’s no shortage of opportunities for you and your family and friends at the fair. Whether this will be your first visit or it’s an annual pilgrimage, your memories will last long after your state fair adventure concludes.
