4 cups peeled and diced potatoes
4 large garlic cloves, peeled
1 teaspoon salt, divided
6 cups water
3/4 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, cut into small pieces

Bring water, potatoes, garlic and 1/2 teaspoon of salt to boil in medium saucepan. Reduce heat and cook 8 to 10 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender.

Drain potatoes and garlic and return to pan; reduce heat and add milk, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper. Mash well with potato masher. Remove from heat and stir in cheese and butter until melted.
