2 cups flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup molasses
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, buttermilk, molasses and vanilla one at a time. Gently mix in the sifted ingredients until blended, but no more than necessary.
Drop by heaping spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until firm to the touch. Cool and remove to wire racks.
