No Limits Pig Show creates a space where every showman shines

Fresh wood shavings cover concrete floors in a sea of gated pens. Metal bleacher seats are packed tight with onlookers, happily sitting shoulder to shoulder in the mid-August heat. Laughter and chatter rattle through the building, accompanied by an occasional oink. The stage is set, and the No Limits Pig Show is about to begin.
Established in 2021, the No Limits Pig Show (NLPS) opens the gate to a new kind of livestock show. Participants with physical or cognitive challenges are invited to enter the show ring at the Missouri State Fair and try their hand at showing pigs.
“Our goal is to provide participants with the best day ever,” says Nici Wilson, NLPS committee lead. “Pigs are more timid than other species, which makes this the perfect teaching opportunity for our exhibitors who might be nervous around more active livestock.”
Planning for the show starts a year in advance. Committee members gather within days of the previous show’s ending to come up with a gameplan for the following year. They become well acquainted with the exhibitors and their potential accommodations.
“Being prepared for anything is our main priority,” says Nici. “In order to make this a good experience for the exhibitors, we think about every single detail. Wheelchairs, food allergies, sensitivities — we’re trying to be 10 steps ahead of it all.”
Their mission to create memories that last a lifetime extends far past the Swine Barn walls. “It’s incredible to see just how many people are invested in the success of these exhibitors,” says Nici. “On the afternoon of NLPS, the carnival crew turns off the flashing lights and loud music so our participants with sensory aversions can experience the magic of a carnival in a comfortable environment.”
The show is hosted by the Missouri State Fair Foundation, who ensure the exhibitors experience a full day at the fair. Their schedule of events includes lunch, a tour of the fairgrounds and a bag of treats, sponsored by various fair vendors.
Exhibitors are paired with an experienced 4-H or FFA livestock ambassador. The ambassadors provide a well-trained, mild-mannered pig, which the pair then prepares for the ring by feeding and washing it. The ambassador passes on their showing knowledge and demonstrates livestock handling best practices.
For many ambassadors, NLPS is an opportunity to share their passion for livestock and skill in the ring with a different audience. Wyatt Collard, a 2024 NLPS ambassador from Carthage, has shown livestock his entire life. From rabbits to hogs, the knowledge from voluenteers like him is the basis of what makes the show incredible — talented and dedicated mentors, funneling their capabilities into a new set of showmen.
“Some of these exhibitors have never seen a show and some of them will never show livestock again,” says Wyatt. “It means so much that the ambassadors get to spend the day teaching them something we’ve dedicated our lives to.”
Once showtime rolls around, the air is buzzing with excitement. Exhibitors and ambassadors wear coordinating T-shirts and enter the ring hand in hand. For the next 90 minutes, the NLPS plays out like a traditional livestock show: classes of exhibitors file into the show ring and are judged based on showmanship and their pig’s composition.
Ambassadors walk side by side with exhibitors, periodically stepping in to redirect the animal or handing over a soft bristle brush to clean away dirt. After every exhibitor has shown, they’re brought back into the ring and awarded a colorful belt buckle and a firm handshake.
The show, which is entering its fifth year in 2025, attracts an audience of all backgrounds, with last year’s notable attendees including former governor and first lady Mike and TeresaParson. But attendees or numbers don’t phase those behind the scenes of it all. “For us, it isn’t about recognition or belt buckles,” says Nici. “The entire day, from start to finish, is about bringing people together and telling them ‘You belong in this ring, no matter what.’ ”
